Make way for cyclists in Tel Aviv

The 'Amsterdam of the Middle East,' Tel Aviv has miles of urban cycling paths and a new bike-share program.

Back in the 1990s, Tel Aviv?s bicycles were pushed to the margins of the urban landscape, which lacked bike lanes or bike racks.

In the past decade, however, Israel?s cosmopolitan capital has reimagined itself as an Amsterdam of the Middle East with miles of bike paths on sidewalks, boulevards, and in the streets.

With its generally flat terrain and temperate climate, Tel Aviv is an ideal city to navigate on two wheels. The network, marked with bicycle stencils, runs the length of the city?s Mediterranean seacoast, reaches down leafy historical avenues, and sweeps through the commercial center. The city also inaugurated a bike rental system, the Tel-O-Fun, with some 150 rental stations throughout the city. Usage has exceeded expectations, and the distinctive green and gray bikes with upright seating have become ubiquitous. A leading enthusiast is Tel Aviv Mayor Ron Huldai, who test-drove one of the Tel-O-Fun bikes and christened a bike traffic light.

Let?s be clear: Tel Aviv is no Amsterdam ? most of the bike lanes are on sidewalks. On trendy Rothschild Boulevard, the cyclists must dodge cafe tables, and on Ibn Gavirol, the bike path is interrupted by trees, benches, and building columns. But in a country where the volatile Israeli driver dominates the roads, some of that turf is being retaken by cyclists.

Judge clears Bruno Mars of cocaine charge

LOS ANGELES?? A Las Vegas judge on Wednesday dismissed the cocaine possession case against pop star Bruno Mars after he successfully completed court-ordered drug education classes and community service, even exceeding the amount of hours he was told to serve.

Clark County District Court Judge Jessie Walsh cleared Bruno of the charge, said Mary Ann Price, court information officer for the 8th Judicial District Court.

Mars, whose real name is Peter Hernandez, was arrested in September 2010 after a bathroom attendendant at the Las Vegas Hard Rock Hotel caught him with "a baggy of white powder," later found to be cocaine, according to a police report at the time.

He pleaded guilty to a charge of possessing cocaine and received a $2,000 fine, 200 hours of community service, drug counseling and was told to stay out of trouble during a year of informal probation. Bruno performed all the requirements and exceeded the 200 hours of service, his attorney told Reuters.

Mars' original guilty plea was nullified and will not show up on his record.

The "Grenade" singer, 26, burst onto music charts in 2010 after collaborating with rapper B.o.B on "Nothin' On You" and Gym Class Heroes' Travie McCoy on "Billionaire." He is currently nominated in six categories at the upcoming Grammy Awards in February.

Judge Walsh took over Mars' case after County Clark Deputy District Attorney David Schubert, who prosecuted Mars in early 2011, was arrested for buying cocaine himself a few months later.

Goldman Sachs ready to sell its stake in Alliance Films (Reuters)

LOS ANGELES (TheWrap.com) ? Goldman Sachs is offloading its majority stake in Alliance Films, according to a report in the Financial Times.

A spokesperson for the investment firm did not immediately respond to requests for comment.

Alliance is a Canadian distributor and producer that has backed such notable films as "Insidious" and "Shame," as well as last year's Best Picture-winning "The King's Speech."

The company boasts a library of 11,000 films and distributes films from Relativity Media, Lionsgate, Focus Features, The Weinstein Company and CBS Films.

The Financial Times reports that Goldman has tapped the Bank of Montreal to oversee a sale of its two thirds stake in the company. Investissement Quebec owns the rest of the company.

Though the Financial Times report provides details of the firm's preparation for a sale, no reason is given for Goldman's decision to divest itself from the distributor.

DIY Exact Change Card [DIY]

DIY Exact Change Card Several years ago we covered the minimum number of coins you'd need to produce exact change for any occasion (10 coins), but we didn't have any great suggestions of how to carry them, but thanks to Instructables, you can cut a credit-card sized piece of cardboard to hold all ten coins in just a few minutes.

Instructables user RTourn found that standard shipping-box cardboard is thick enough to hold two coins by friction. He cut out a credit-card sized piece of cardboard and cut openings for each of the four types of coins.

Once this is done you'll have a simple and free way to carry exact change wherever you go. If rocking a cardboard cutout is too ghetto for you and you have access to a 3D printer, you can print out a plastic version of this change card.

With Iowa's voting, GOP likely to plot future path

DES MOINES -- Republicans enter a new election year Tuesday debating more than just who should be their nominee for president against Barack Obama. They're engaged in a struggle over how radically they can or should change the country's course.

On one side is the tea party conservative, the kind of voter Richard Nixon once said belonged to a silent majority, who simmered as the party spent and piled up debt through the Bush years, then exploded with rage with the ascent of Democrat Barack Obama and even more spending and debt.

On the other side is the pragmatic, establishment Republican, who also yearns to change course but argues the party first must win power. These Republicans fear that confrontational politics and policies could scare off moderate independents, making a win more difficult and governing impossible.

The fault line was evident in 2010 primaries that purged moderate candidates in states such as Delaware and Nevada; in state capitols over how hard to hit public employees; and in the U.S. House of Representatives in clashes between party leaders prone to compromise and new members intent on drawing a hard line in the federal budget.

And it cuts through the presidential campaign, as tea party conservatives cheer candidates such as Rep. Ron Paul of Texas, who vows to cut $1 trillion in spending in his first year, Texas Gov. Rick Perry, who slams one rival for voting to raise the nation's debt ceiling eight times, and Rep. Michele Bachmann of Minnesota, who boasts of her opposition to raising the government's debt ceiling last summer.

At the same time, pragmatists support candidates such as former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney, who stresses a more collaborative approach to governing. Romney, for example, says he'd cut the federal work force, but through attrition, not layoffs.

"The Republican Party has an identity crisis," said Craig Robinson, a former political director of the Iowa Republican Party. "There is a split within the party."

Rick Halvorsen, an insurance salesman from Indianola, Iowa, and chairman of the Warren County Republican Party, is among those who want the party to be bolder, much bolder, even if it risks losing an election.

"The alternative is to lose our country," he said. "We're $15 trillion in debt. Nobody's got the intestinal fortitude to do what needs to be done. We're way past time to do something."

Worse, he said, the idea of softening the party's stand to win the election doesn't even guarantee victory. "That's what they told us about McCain," he said of the 2008 nominee who went on to lose the general election.

He decided late to support former Sen. Rick Santorum of Pennsylvania, who urged Iowa Republicans to vote for someone who should win, not just someone who could win. "Don't put forward somebody who isn't good enough to do what's necessary to change this country," Santorum said.

Darwin Hofmeister, a farmer from Ackley, Iowa, is another Republican weary of compromise by his party.

"When we got a chance to make a difference, we didn't. George W. Bush, with a Republican Congress, he didn't change anything. Instead, we got more Medicare," said Hofmeister.

At a town hall meeting in Mason City, he asked Romney if he would really cut spending. He walked away unconvinced.

"It wasn't enough to convince me he's conservative," he said. "Now, that governor of Wisconsin. He stuck it out and now it's working."
