UFN 30: Munoz Talks Title Shot, Weidman-Silva II

Although Mark Munoz was originally scheduled to fight #4 ranked middleweight at UFC Fight Night 30, there will still be plenty riding on the card’s headliner. While Lyoto Machida will be making his debut at 185, he is a former light-heavyweight champ who stayed within striking distance of the title for a long time. In other words, whoever wins Saturday’s fight will move on to big things.

In a pre-fight interview with USA Today (MMA Junkie.com), here’s what Munoz had to say about what the winner might gain.

“I think with Lyoto going down to middleweight, and being a former champion, and fighting me, he definitely has a way to be able to fight for a title (quickly),” Munoz said. “But that’s only if he gets past me. I truly believe we both have a shot at a title after this fight.”

Of course, Vitor Belfort, “Jacare” Souza and Bisping are all ranked ahead of Munoz, so they might not agree with his assessment, but a win over Machida would be huge. All of this could also depend on who wins the rematch between champion Chris Weidman and Anderson Silva, and how the fight goes down (a rubber match isn’t impossible).

Speaking of UFC 168, here’s what Munoz had to say about the highly anticipated title fight.

“Anderson’s my good friend, and I want nothing but the best for Anderson. I want him to win,” Munoz said. “But at the same time, I don’t want to fight my friend again (like with Machida). I want him to win the fight, but I also want Weidman to win because I want that rematch. Bad. Bad.”

Fair enough. In the meantime we can look forward to UFC FN 30, which has some interesting fights booked. Some of the other main bouts include Pearson-Guillard, Jimmo-Manuwa, Parke-Tuck, Lineker-Harris and Cedenblad-Sakara.
